When it comes to restaurants in downtown Fort Smith, Mike and Karen Stephenson want to create a space with something for everyone. Mike Stephenson said he and Karen initially wanted to open a restaurant in downtown Fort Smith to cater to a different part of the town.

Karen Stephenson said they rented the space at Garrison Avenue for several months before they opened the restaurant. They also bought new furniture and partially remodeled the inside of the space. The entire project cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, she said. Gus's now sports what Karen Stephenson calls a "garage theme" with license plates and similar decorations on the walls.
It also has a sports bar, a live music stage and a pool table. Karen Stephenson got the idea for a pool table after she noticed that the game is popular among people under 21, she said.
